Our verdict

The ranking is the readers’ verdict, set next to ours. This page counts every October ballot live, so the ranking you see is the one readers are writing right now.

Fashion has many indexes. The best known is the Lyst Index, a quarterly ranking of the hottest brands built from the searches, sales and social mentions of the shopping platform's users; Chanel, Miu Miu and Dior led it in the second quarter of 2026.1 It measures what people buy. The Monthly Ranking measures something different: what readers choose when they are given two options and one click.

How the ranking works

Every story on this site ends with a ballot. The ballots of the month are collected on this page. For each, you see both choices, the share each one has, and how many votes have been cast. The numbers come straight from the vote counter and change while you read.

  • A ballot with a clear result, 70 percent or more for one side, is a verdict.
  • A ballot close to 50 percent is a split: the question divides our readers.
  • A ballot with very few votes is still open; vote and move it.

Why it matters

Small, quick choices describe taste better than long questionnaires. Stitch Fix, the online styling service, collected around 200 million thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings on single pieces through a simple game, and used them to understand what its customers like.2 Whering, the digital wardrobe app from London, reached 10 million users by mid 2026.3 Taste is data, and the most honest data is a choice made in a second.

Our verdicts are opinions. The ranking is the result.

What we do with it

We use the ranking three ways. It shapes what we write next: a split result deserves a deeper story. It goes into The Friday Edit, our weekly letter. And it feeds STYLERZ, the fashion app we are building, which starts from what readers actually choose instead of guessing.

The October ballots

The list below covers the stories of October, from barn jackets to velvet. Our own verdicts are in each story, so you can compare: we said wear it to barn jackets, the office to the skirt suit, comeback to brooches, and wear it small to chartreuse. Where readers disagree, we will say so in November.

Your vote is anonymous

We count the choice, never the person. You can vote once per ballot from each browser.
